Beader's Showcase

"A Place for all Beaders to Showcase their Creations."

I was wondering about web sites. I would like to make a web page but I have no clue what to do or were to start.
I know some one that makes them for a living. I have only met him about 5 times at the most.
Last time I saw him I asked him about a web page for my Jewelry. He asked me how much money I had to spend. I could tell he was thinking big bucks. I was not thinking that at all.
Needless to say he told me a fair web site would cost $2500.00. I told him I would have to pass.He said I would need good search engine and some other things that I had no clue what he was talking about. Can anybody start me in the right direction.
He said I would need good search engine and some other things that I had no clue what he was talking about. To me that is a ton of money. Someone tell me he is full of it!

Hi Jill

How you go about it depends on what you want to do on the site.

A site that is just like a catalogue showing your work and talking about what you do is reasonable simple. A lot of web hosts have a tool for building a website as part of the hosting package, and they usually have a range of templates to choose frtom. You just add some graphics and text.

A site where you can sell and process payments etc is more complicated. However, there is more than one way to achieve the end result. You could have a basic site with no database just static pages and use PayPal buttons to sell your products.

Hard to give you specific advice without knowing more about what you want to achieve, but be very confident in whoever you choose as I have encountered a lot of failed websites. Funds can be a factor but also the developer not being able to interpret the clients needs is a big one.

Post any specific questions here and I will try to help. I am sure other members will be interested as well.

$2500!!!!
Wow, this guy is ready to take you for all he can!
I do my own site using Yahoo web hosting, Mals-ecommerce free shopping cart system and take my own pictures etc. Now it is alot of work to get going, but easy to maintain once your initial site is up. You can submit to any search engine for free, find numerous free link exchange directories or use Google or Yahoo adwords campaigns at a price you control. I would shop around and talk to other artists in your area. You might find someone willing to help and teach you how to create and maintain your own site for a fraction of the cost. I would also recommend searching the internet for articles about creating a website. Review the cost of products offered by Yahoo and Google so you are informed. Remember when you control things yourself, you can post new items quickly, eliminate sold items and do other editing as needed instead of waiting for someone else to react to your needs. There is a ton of information out there, so do your homework before talking dollars. I used to teach on the high school level, and my students could create a basic single web page with text, backgrounds, clip art, photos, links and mail tos in under 2 hours. It is not that hard to do on your own. Feel free to contact me if I can answer any specific questions.

There are many web hosting companies on the internet that provide a pre made format for your web site. One that is very popular with jewelry artists is papas shop. Another one is 1 & 1 which I have used. I currently use Smart Logic. You can look at my site www.colgandesigns.com , I am using one of their pre made formats, and the price is about $50 per year with no set up fee. 1&1 is even less expensive, I haven't priced Papas Shop but it isn't expensive. I think the $2500 is very expensive for something that you can do yourself with a little help from tech support at which ever company you choose. Good luck.

I looked at your site and it is very nice. I love your beads they are really beautiful. Your Jewelry is stunning.I am going to do it myself with some help from my sons friend. I would never pay $2500 I cant afford that. I will keep you posted. I was just in Florida for a week so when I am done catching up on everything I am going to focus on the web site. I went to some bead shops in Palm Beach and wow the beads are really beautiful. The bead stores were so busy with people I could not believe it. It is nice to see so many people love the creativity of Jewelry making. Needless to say I came home with lots of new stuff to work with.
Thanks you for your help.

Yes, he is. I don't know much about Website and in fact, I am going to be taking a class in January just for that. It is a program called Dreamweaver and it is suppose to be very good to work with. If you don't have a website yet and can hold on , I would love to do one for you with what I will learn. NO CHARGE EITHER!!!

Also think about taking a course at your community college. I know the economy is hurting everyone, but there should be something that not too expensive.

Hi, Jill. Website design is one of my other hobbies, I did my site sarahsgallery.co.cc

I would recommend trying a hosting server that does not use ads and is moderately cheap or free. I use 000webhost and co.cc. To get a ending like co.cc or x6.to or something like that your host would give you a nameserver. You then enter the nameserver on the site where you are getting your ending.

000webhost offers some templates, but what I would recommend is buying a cheap but fitting template and learning some basic coding skills to help you edit it. Most template sites also have instructions. Also, if you don't want to use 000webhost try to find something that supports some of the more complicated languages such as php and MySQL. It is useful even if you don't plan on using those at first, eventually you might. I started out with css and eventually installed some php scripts.

If you plan on selling your items try researching some fairly priced companies that will let you host the store on your own site or if you want to have just a link to the store there are some companies that will put your store on their server.

I haven't paid a penny for my site. I don't have a store, though. Just wanted to point out that it can be free in some cases.

Well, good luck. If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask. I'll answer as best as I can. I don't know a lot about some coding languages, I really just taught myself everything I know. I have fun with this stuff. Yes, I'm kind of a nerd for a 16 year old. :)
